FFS People, It's NOT A Democracy

Watching ACORN's CEO, Bertha Lewis, attempting to defend the organization. In the course of her mostly incoherent rambling she said something that I have heard people say repeatedly.

"......well if this isn't what a democracy is, maybe I outta check my definition of what a democracy really is..."

Alright everyone. Let's do this one together. On the count of three:

America isn't a democracy, it is a Republic. America has never been a democracy, ever. In a democracy the majority rules, which is mob rule. In a Republic, the law rules, which ensures equality and justice for all.

The difference isn't just a matter of semantics. In a democracy, if 51 people want you dead and 49 want you to live, you're toast. In a Republic, you get the protections of the law, which ensure the right to a speedy trial by your peers.
Now it's true that a Republic isn't a perfect. "It's a system created by man, and as man is imperfect, so are his creations." (hat tip to Levin). But it's a far better system than any other we've come up with so far.
